In cities with a Chinatown, weekend mornings bring dim sum carts or order sheets, and lines form early at the most popular spots in Berkeley; walk-ins are standard and reservations are uncommon outside large banquet restaurants. Regional labels matter: Cantonese, Sichuan, Hunan, Shanghainese and Taiwanese kitchens cook very differently, so a restaurant's stated region is a better guide to the food than the word "Chinese" alone. Some smaller restaurants in California are BYOB with no corkage fee; call ahead to confirm. A tip of 15-20% is customary for table service but not expected at counter-order takeout. Spice level, MSG and allergen questions are normal to ask before ordering, and most kitchens are happy to leave an ingredient out or tone down the heat if you mention it when ordering rather than after the food arrives.

Hours have not been published for this listing yet. Most businesses of this type in Berkeley keep standard business hours, but call ahead to be sure, especially on weekends and holidays. You can reach Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks at (669) 270-1688; calling is usually the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions. I love this place! For the price you pay, you definitely get a lot of food. I had the treasure chicken box and it was delicious! The food was served quickly and fresh, and there was so much juiciness and flavor in every bite of my fried chicken. The manager was working that day, and he was so sweet. He served us with a smile, and gave us free fish balls, chicken, and milk tea before he even found out it was my friend’s birthday. The milk tea was super good too - even better than some Local Bubble tea spots. Definitely check this place out and support this small business. I’ll be coming back whenever I can.

Got their fried chicken breasts. Owner was nice and even gave out samples of a new recipe he was trying. The chicken was crunchy and well flavored. Since it was a whole breast, it wasn't as juicy as the Taiwanese popcorn chicken I've had at other places.

I came here after eating really greasy food. The lemon drink that I got was really refreshing and was nice to drink to get rid of that greasy feeling. The place is very small but it has cute decorations. I also tried the chicken which wasnt too bad.

Shihlin is one of my go to hole in the wall restaurants in Berkeley. They cook to order fresh Taiwanese street snacks. 😍 I always get the treasure rice box, which includes Five spice fried chicken on top of rice, with sliced tofu drizzled with a soy garlicky yummy sauce, a tea egg and pickled Greens. Okayyy go check them out.

Service: Staff were super kind throughout my whole experience. They were very attentive after I brought up this problem, apologized, and quickly fixed the issue. This is what we had: Crispy Chicken: Solid chicken! I love the crunch to meat ratio. It reminds me of popcorn chicken from a boba place because of the texture and they give you that (orange, reddish) spicy powder to add flavor. However, this chicken has more meat and doesn't taste dry. Sweet Plum Potato Fries: I really like their take on sweet potato fries. My friend noted that this tasted like sweet potatoes dipped in churro powder. I couldn't taste much plum, but it was delicious nonetheless. Treasure Rice Box (rice, crispy chicken, half an egg, tofu): You get the same crispy chicken as if you ordered the actual "crispy chicken". The rice had a slight drizzle of sauce and the meal was paired with an egg and some tofu. Overall, pretty good. Handmade Oyster Mee Sua (A mix up order item): Not a fan of seafood so I can't properly rate this. Grandma or Grandpa Braised Meat Rice (not sure bc this was a mix up order): Wasn't really a fan. I didn't really like how they prepared the meat and it felt a little fatty. Jiayi C
